PROJECT KRALJEVICA

The problem of backward and handicapped persons has existed for a long time in our part of Croatia. Due to specific circumstances the share of our population was always bigger than average in the developed world, even bigger than in other parts of Croatia. In this area (Primorsko-goranska zupanija) from total population of 300.000 habitants, 676 handicapped persons have officially been registered (287 children and 389 adults).
At the beginning of the Serbia-Croatia war in 1991 in Croatia all the children from Vrlika Hospital (Knin aria) were evacuated to various destination because General Mladics rebel army captured the town of Vrlika. Of those 287 children, 24 were transported and hospitalized in Kraljevica with inappropriate existing conditions. Our Rotary Club established immediately committee for the permanent monitoring and helping of those children in Kraljevica.
The Project is managed by a separate Club committee (four members), but is always well supported by all other members too. Without any doubt this is a major activity for our 32 members.
The total value of our engagement through this period (from October 1991 up to today) was around 300.000 DEM (200.000 USD). If we take in consideration finance that our Club is able to raise for this project in existing circumstances we are very happy with result.
During the past period, with our determination and involvement in helping handicapped children in Kraljevica, Rotary Club Rijeka also became slowly identified and recognized as a major contributor in this human effort. Local news media have adequately reported our involvement and clearly the population is pleased and satisfied with our work and approval of our work is evident from the content of our local papers media, confirming that we serve those who need us most. Through this project, Rotary Club Rijeka has achieved recognition as a major organization to help local authority in resolving problems of handicapped children in this region.
In cooperation with(Swiss) RC Neuchatel we have repaired all installations for central heating, window fittings and part of the roof repairs on Kraljevica Hospital. With RC Llanishen (Cardiff-UK) and the London Fire Brigade Department we have organized essential building repairs and interior painting.
With this on going project we received recognition in year 1996. at the annual conference in Baden, from our District 1910, chosen from 75 projects.
As a long term solution for resolving problems of handicapped person in our district, Rijeka town council allocated 6500 m2 for the building of a new home for those children. At the moment a desperate need exists for the hospitalization of 80 handicapped children and adults, including those hospitalized in Kraljevica. We are expecting that construction will start before the end of 1997.
Our Rotary Club is recognised as a major partner to secure all necessary equipment for the new hospital. In the meantime we are continuously taking care of our children in Kraljevica.
We invite all Rotary Clubs ,who are looking for a project of this nature to come and join us ,since the scope of the project is reaaly well beyond our own means .
