JANUS THE "HAMLET" ACTOR AN EXAMPLE OF THE LATVIAN SPIRIT
KULDIGA ROTARY CLUB has a very special friend and protégé.
Janus was well known in Latvian theatre. He was a very accomplished actor, who had played Hamlet at the Riga and Moscow Theatre. Then one day he fell from the roof of his Cottage, which he was building in the forest, some 30 km from KULDIGA City.
Thereafter Janus remained totally paralysed, lovingly looked after by Janus' wife.
There was no car and no running water in Janus' cottage. Every time Janus needed a bath his wife would run down to the lake with a bucket, even in the freezing winter. Friendly neighbors took his wife shopping.
Originally Janus was a "social project " of the club. But Janus was much more than that. Janus was intelligent and he missed intelligent conversation more than his need for pity. Today Janus is truly a friend of the Kuldiga Rotary club, which is also "home" for his surgeon Dr Inara Rozentale.
When Charter night arrived beautiful food was prepared and acquired. What's more the Kumeu Rotary Club from New Zealand had supplied their delegate Henk Aalders and wife Nemia with 50 kilos of New Zealand produced "Cabernet Sauvignon " especially for the big occasion.
Janus was not forgotten. Food and a few bottles of NZ finest were put aside, and the next day there was a special celebration lunch in Janus' cottage attended by half the membership, Inara his surgeon, and Henk and Nemia.
The Club on its grand occasion did not forget Janus. Today running water flows through Janus' cottage thanks to the volunteer labour and financial contributions from the clubs members
You know, said the Kuldiga Special School Computer Teacher with a smile on his face: " We just have no money to buy computers for our students". "But I'll be darned if my pupils can't do computer studies!".... With amazing ingenuity the teacher had gone to the "Skundra former Soviet Military Base", and scrounged amongst the rubbish, which the Russians had left behind. A bit of this and a bit of that some cables under the tables some parts on top of the table (which all should be INSIDE THE COMPUTER), .........IT WORKED!!!.. AND THE SCHOOL HAD SOME OPERATIONAL COMPUTERS. WHAT A WONDERFUL SPIRIT!!... WHAT INGENUITY!!.
